  • these automatic drawings were made following a simple process—

    without a plan, I placed any readily-available object with a curved edge (such as a lid, jar, coin, roll of tape etc.) on a page with my left hand and began to trace the edge of that object with a blue ink pen held in my right hand; then, I moved that process around the page, following my emotional state and unconscious impulses

    these sessions usually lasted no more than 10 - 20 minutes; I returned to some of the drawings later to add shading or texture but did not alter their fundamental initial incarnation

    this process is related to automatism, a method of making art without conscious thought, accessing material from the unconscious mind as part of the creative process; automatism is often associated with both Spirtualists and Surrealist figures like Andre Breton, Hilma af Klint, Andre Masson, and Max Ernst
